The last 20 years has seen a rapid introduction of the world into a true ‘Information Age’, where information about practically anything can be found in a matter of moments, thanks largely due to the use of the Internet.

Logistics has a lot in common with the boom of electronic communication. Twenty years ago, areas of logistics and supply chain management were considered to be necessary evils, costs to the organisation, and received little or no attention. Like electronic communication, logistics and supply chain management has a new image – and now in this age of fast information transfer and high need for security, the two have combined. Every day in countless media sources, both on and off the Internet, we see press releases about a “new” electronic information or transaction service related to logistics.

This subject aims to provide an overview of the use of technology in logistics today, including the provision of information throughout the supply chain with consideration for productivity gains and the impact on cost and performance.
